The God Who Forgets

“For I will forgive their iniquity and their sin I will remember no more.” (Jeremiah 31:34)

Divine forgetfulness. God chooses to forget our sin. How I wish I could do this – forget my sin, or forget the sins of others. By God’s grace, I don’t remember all of the wrong and bad stuff I have done, but it sure is impossible to forget some of it! Thankfully, I know that I am forgiven!

But what blows my mind is that God chooses to forget our sin. Think about it! This is what makes forgiveness so rich and compelling. Total, complete forgiveness means that our sin is forgotten.

Here’s how we can apply this amazing truth in our lives.

First, receive His love. God loves you; Jesus took all of the punishment for all of your sin. Meditate on that little word “all”. Every wrong thought or motivation. It is all forgiven – and forgotten. That means God thinks of you more highly than you think of yourself. His thoughts are remarkable toward you. He sees no sin in you. He only sees good in you. Wow! Could this be true! Oh, what grace! Receive that love!

Second, forgive others completely. Even if we can’t forget the sins committed against us, we sure can look at them in a new light recognizing God’s complete forgiveness over us. How do we treat someone who has sinned against us? Are we able to treat them as if they have done no wrong? I know there is a difference between forgiveness and trust. But is there?

A Christian life is a life of forgiveness. If we forgive the way we have been forgiven – understanding divine forgetfulness – we will experience freedom, joy, and boundless grace.
