Doodle 4 Google Canada Winner: Sea Telescope

Yesterday, it was reported that 17-year-old high school student, Cindy Tang, from Toronto, won the Doodle 4 Google Canada contest. Here’s her drawing, named “Sea Telescope.” You’ll see the doodle on Google Canada’s homepage all day today.

The theme of the doodle contest was “If I could invent anything, I would invent…”

Her answer?

“I would invent a telescope that would show us the depth of the sea (all of it). I’ve heard we’ve discovered less than five per cent of the ocean [with] 95 per cent still left unseen by human eyes.” (I confirmed this fact by checking out the website of the U.S. National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration.)

To be able to see all of the depth of the ocean, 100%, would be an amazing experience. What is down there?

I once went snorkelling with my wife off of the coast of Mexico. It was a pretty amazing experience. It left me in awe of the beauty in our ocean’s depths. Yet to realize that there is a whole additional world so close to us, and yet so unexplored, is fascinating.

When it comes to the mysteries of nature, some of the best writings are those found in the Bible book of Job, specifically chapters 38-41.

“Have you entered the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in search of the depths?…Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth” (Job 38:16, 18).

God’s creation, whether the nature that we can see, or the hidden depths of the ocean, speaks to the fact that He is infinitely creative, majestic, and powerful.

Psalm 19:1-3 comments on this. “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard.”

The power of nature is a universal language. It is God’s gentle witness to mankind. Romans 1:20 says it well: “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.”

When you see the wonders of nature, the canyons, waterfalls, endless sky and stars, the amazing animals, or the depths of the ocean, it should cause us to bow our hearts in wonder and worship; It should cause us to recognize the power and authority of God. For the Christian, it is a prompt to worship. For those who don’t yet know the Lord, it should bring them closer to belief in Him.

We may never have a telescope that will enable us to explore the 95% of the ocean depth that has never been seen by a human eye, but we are able to know the One who made it.  When we do, life makes more sense, and the world becomes more beautiful.

Congratulations, Cindy. Great doodle!
